Coastal Climb 2009

Simple Choices for a Sea of Change

September 18 - December 11

The site will remain open until May 28 for employees interested in
logging exercise throughout the school year.

"As little as 20-30 minutes of exercise most days is all you need to be doing to see results. That's less than 3% of your waking day, and you'll feel better for the other 97%. Think about it...that is a great return on investment".
Christopher Bergland
The Athlete's Way: Sweat and the Biology of Bliss

Coastal Climb is an online physical activity challenge designed to empower employees and spouses to make simple changes in lifestyle behaviors to improve the health of our bodies and oceans. While traveling along a 1,214 mile virtual trail stretching from Florida to Maine, you will learn important facts about the health of our oceans and our bodies  and simple changes you can make to protect them.

Employees and spouses can participate on their own or as part of a team (5 participant minimum). All logged exercise is automatically converted to steps. Team progress on the virtual trail is based on average steps and individual progress is based on total steps. Teams have until December 11 to travel as far as they can on the virtual trail. The site will remain open until May 28 for individuals wishing to continue logging exercise on the virtual trail after the team challenge has ended.

The goal is to get moving and keep moving!  How far can your team make it in 12 weeks? How far can you personally travel by the end of the school year? Friday prize raffles will be held over the course of the 12-weeks for all participants logging exercise 4 out of 7 days during the previous week. Because we all have different fitness levels and abilities, weekly prize raffles are based on logging frequency instead of distance traveled. Team prizes at the end of the team challenge will be based on average distance traveled.

Join us Saturday, September 19 at Coastal Cleanup!

Challenge participants receive 2 for 1 exercise minutes at the event!

Why Participate in Coastal Climb 2009...

Better Health
Type II diabetes can be prevented by regular exercise and a healthy diet. Evidence suggests that 1/3 of cancer related deaths each year are related to lack of proper nutrition and physical activity. Recent research concludes that about 90% of all heart attacks can be avoided through a proper diet and regular exercise. Small changes in how much you move and what you eat can have a big impact on your quality of life and risk for chronic disease.

Fun Prizes
For those who need extra encouragement to keep moving, prizes will be awarded based on the following:

  • weekly raffles for participants who log exercise 4 out of 7 days during the previous week (Friday - Thursday)

  • the best weekly testimonial posted on the challenge message board

  • the most improved team

  • the top three teams

  • the final state reached on May 28 for those who continue logging after the team challenge ends

See the prize link at the bottom of the page for additional information.

Protect Our Oceans
The oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's surface and contain 97 percent of all living matter. People's actions on land contribute to many of the threats facing the oceans, such as coastal development and pollution from factories, farms, and homes. Although the threats facing today's oceans seem daunting, simple changes in human behaviors can have profound impacts on the health of our ocean waters and the communities that depend on them. As you travel the Coastal Climb route, you will receive helpful e-tips tips to improve your personal health and protect the health of our beautiful coastline.

Affordable Premiums
If you are concerned about affordable healthcare, it is important to realize just how much sedentary lifestyles cost the District in healthcare dollars. According to The American Institute for Preventive Medicine, $1,066,502.69 of the District's annual healthcare costs are a result of  inactive lifestyles. Higher healthcare costs translate to higher premiums for everyone.

...Because, a few small changes can make a big difference in the quality of your life and our world. More energy, less stress, better health, cleaner beaches and a healthier planet can be yours for a small commitment. Join us September 18 to create a sea of change!
