Why Participate in
Coastal Climb 2009...
Better Health
Type II diabetes can be
prevented by regular exercise and a healthy diet. Evidence
suggests that 1/3 of cancer related deaths each year are related
to lack of proper nutrition and physical activity. Recent
research concludes that about 90% of all heart attacks can be
avoided through a proper diet and regular exercise. Small
changes in how much you move and what you eat can have a big
impact on your quality of life and risk for chronic disease.
Fun Prizes
For those who need extra encouragement to keep moving, prizes
will be awarded based on the following:
-
weekly
raffles for participants who log exercise 4 out of 7 days
during the previous week (Friday - Thursday)
-
the best
weekly testimonial posted on the challenge message board
-
the most
improved team
-
the top
three teams
-
the final
state reached on May 28 for those who continue logging after
the team challenge ends
See the prize
link at the bottom of the page for additional information.
Protect Our Oceans
The oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's
surface and contain 97 percent of all living matter. People's
actions on land contribute to many of the threats facing the
oceans, such as coastal development and pollution from
factories, farms, and homes. Although the threats facing today's
oceans seem daunting, simple changes in human behaviors can have
profound impacts on the health of our ocean waters and the
communities that depend on them.
As you travel the Coastal Climb route, you
will receive helpful e-tips tips
to improve your personal health and protect the health of our beautiful coastline.
Affordable Premiums
If you are concerned about
affordable healthcare, it is important to realize just how much
sedentary lifestyles cost the District in healthcare dollars.
According to The American Institute for Preventive Medicine,
$1,066,502.69 of the District's annual healthcare costs are a
result of inactive lifestyles. Higher healthcare
costs translate to higher premiums for everyone.
...Because, a few small
changes can make a big difference in the quality of your life
and our world. More
energy, less stress, better health, cleaner beaches and a
healthier planet can be yours for a small
